Philippe Starck Costes Chair

A chair with three legs? Can it work? We think it can!

The famous three-legged design of Philippe Starck brings to light a positive result in this unusual design attempt.

In the famous Café Costes near the Centre Beaubourg in Paris, this unusual chair model was successfully used.

The background to Starck's design was to prevent waiters from tripping over the chair legs. Whether this design did the trick we unfortunately don´t know.

With the extraordinary design of the Costes, Starck gained enormous recognition.

Philippe Starck was born in Paris in 1949. He studied furniture design and interior design at the Eccole Nissin de Camondo. At the age of 20, Starck already became artistic director at Pierre Cardin.
In 1983, Philippe Starck was among those chosen to design the private rooms of then French President Mitterand at the Elysee Palace. Starck gained international recognition in 1982 when he designed the interior and furniture of the Café Costes in Paris.

Starck's work betrayed his interest in zoomorphic forms that were always laced with a dose of humor. The table lamp Miss Sissi or the design of a fruit press in the shape of a long-legged spider-like insect are expressions of this formal language.
